Dental Implants
If you’ve suffered from tooth loss and wish to permanently restore the gaps in your smile, then dental implants may be for you. A dental implant itself is a thin metal bar or frame that can be fused directly to your jawbone, replicating the root of a tooth. The implant can then act as an anchor for dentures, bridges and even permanent prosthetic teeth. This stability makes eating and drinking feel much more comfortable and natural.
The Process
Initially, your dentist will scan your mouth to determine if you are eligible for implants. Only patients with healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implants will be able to get them.
If there is enough bone of good quality, then the implant placement can be planned. In some cases, if there is not enough bone to support the implant, then bone augmentation or grafting may be necessary. This is a complex process and can add to the treatment length and cost.
Once your implant has been placed, it may need around 3 - 6 months to integrate fully with the bone. If you’re waiting for a permanent prosthetic tooth, you will be provided with a temporary crown until the implant is fully integrated.
Dental implants require a lot of care, so having a good oral hygiene routine is imperative.
